Open file links in the desktop app

When you click on a Motiff link, the file will open in your browser by default.

Motiff supports opening links in the desktop app. You can set the default way to open links via a popup or the main menu.

Tip: Before using this feature, you need to download the latest version of the Motiff desktop app.

After installing the Motiff desktop app and logging in with the same account as your browser, you can open links in the desktop app using the following methods.

  1. 1.Open any file you have access to in the browser.
  2. 2.Click Main menu - Open in desktop app.

Tip: If you haven’t downloaded the desktop app, you can see Get desktop app in the main menu and click on it to download. 'Main menu-02.png'

macOS

  1. 1.Copy the Motiff file link.
  2. 2.Open the Motiff desktop app and click File - Open File URL From Clipboard. 'macOS.png'

Windows

  1. 1.Copy the Motiff file link.
  2. 2.Open the Motiff desktop app, click '16_Common_ArrowDown (3).svg' , and select Open File URL From Clipboard. 'Windows.png'

Set default file opening method

You can set the default file opening method via a popup or the main menu.

Popup settings are for quick actions when opening a file for the first time, while the main menu allows you to change preferences anytime. This setting applies to how all files are opened.

Tip: The popup only appears the first time you open a file. If you have completed the setup, it will no longer appear.

You can modify the default opening method via the main menu.

  1. 1.Open any file you have access to in the browser. A popup will appear at the bottom of the canvas. 'Change default settings in the popup.png'
  2. 2.Check Always open in the app to set the default opening method.
    • Checked: Files will open in the desktop app by default.
    • Unchecked: Files will open in the browser by default.

  1. 1.Open any file you have access to in the browser.
  2. 2.Click Main menu - Preferences. 'Change default settings in the main menu.png'
  3. 3.Select Open links in desktop app to set the default opening method.
    • Checked: Files will open in the desktop app by default.
    • Unchecked: Files will open in the browser by default.

    What should I do if the popup doesn’t appear after opening a file?

    The popup only appears the first time you open a file. If you have completed the setup, it will no longer appear. You can modify the default opening method via the main menu.

    Why doesn’t the system follow my default link opening settings?

    Browsers store default file opening settings in their cache. If you clear the browser cache, these settings will reset, and Motiff files will no longer automatically open in the desktop app. You can reset the default opening method via the main menu.

    Why does the main menu still display a download prompt even though I have already installed the desktop app?

    You can follow these steps to troubleshoot:

    • Not logged into the same account: Make sure the desktop app and browser use the same Motiff account. If not, you can switch accounts and try again.
    • Outdated desktop app: Make sure the Motiff desktop app is updated to the latest version. You can restart the app to complete automatic updates or visit the Motiff website to download the latest version.
